Vitamin knowledge
What effects do vitamins have on my body?
Vitamins play an important role in many of the body’s metabolic processes. For example, vitamins B2 and B3 help maintain normal skin. Vitamins B5 and B6 reduce lethargy and fatigue. Other vitamins affect normal immune or neural function, or support energy metabolism.
Can the body produce its own vitamins?
The human body is not able to produce vitamins. This is why vitamins must be consumed via food. Vitamin D3 is an exception, since it can be produced using sunlight.
Which foods contain which vitamins?
Are there differences in quality among vitamins?
In general, vitamins are sensitive to air and heat. Long storage or excessively long cooking or baking times reduces the amount of vitamins contained in food.
How do vitamins differ from one another?
Vitamins can be divided into two groups. The first group is that of the fat-soluble vitamins, which include vitamins A, D, E, and K. These vitamins can be stored in the body in adequate quantities with the help of fat.
The second group are water-soluble vitamins, which include all B vitamins as well as vitamin C. Daily consumption is crucial, since these vitamins can only be stored in the body in very limited quantities. Various factors (e.g., alcoholism, medication, or gastrointestinal disorders) can lead to the development of nutritional deficiencies.
